As a landscape designer of twenty five years water features were a big part of my life. Almost every garden I designed contained a water feature – even very small gardens, as can be seen in my first book, Small Spaces Beautiful Gardens. My third book was called Water Features For Small Gardens published by Timber Press and in it I explain how valuable a water feature is for bringing a touch of magic and beauty. Here is my opening paragraph from that book:
“In my twenty years of designing and building landscapes I have found no single feature more effective in bringing charm and grace, beauty and magic to a garden than a water feature. This is especially true for small gardens. Where else can you find placed calm and eternal movement melded into a shimmering display of brilliant color and caressing sound…”
And, it turns out, the same is true for indoor fountains. The have a quality of life enhancement. They bring focus and add a kind of livingness to a room. What else in the room is in motion and creates soothing sounds? No other inanimate presence in the room does this. And the quality of presence is another dimension a water feature brings out in us. They wake us up and focus us with their gentle sounds and motion.
Although we advertise our fountains as cat fountains, and indeed, cat fountains they are, they are also indoor water features. In fact, that is what they originally were intended to be. I had an idea for a fountain I wanted for myself. I was working in copper and making copper leaves but I needed a ceramic bowl of particular size and shape. I wasn’t a potter at the time so commissioned a potter to make my bowl. What she made wasn’t even close to the drawing I had given her so in frustration I took up pottery.
I began making small fountains and putting them around the house and found my cat, Bijou using them and I realized I never saw him use his water bowl. A light bulb came on and I wondered, is this a thing – cat fountains? A google search pulled up over six million listings for cat fountains. (Now it pulls up over eight million). And the handmade, ceramic cat fountain was born – and is doing well. So is the handmade ceramic indoor water feature because every cat fountain is equally an indoor fountain for home décor.
There are many fake, made in China of resin (read plastic) fountains available. They are mass produced of god awful stuff and sold pretty cheaply. Which is good because cheap is what they are. There is no quality to them.
By comparison, our fountains are expensive. That’s because they are ceramic, handmade, one-of-a-kind by artists. They are not mass produced. Although we repeat our favorite designs, each indoor fountain is unique. Every fountain bowl is wheel-thrown, not made in a mold. Each center piece is wheel-thrown then hand-built. Many are carved and painted with under-glazes and each indoor fountain is glazed individually. The copper work is all handmade. All this translates to a quality of attention that goes into the making of each water feature and is reflected in the quality of the product. Commercial, made in China resin fountains, in fact, don’t compare.
We make small and large indoor fountains and some outdoor fountains. Many are very suitable as desktop fountains, others are excellent as home decor accents and focal points in your living room and even for your bedroom. And, indoor water features are beneficial because moving water creates negative ions – which, in fact, are highly positive.
