DOES YOUR CAT NEED A CAT FOUNTAIN?
Does youe cat jump up onto the counter every time you turn on the faucet? Does he drink from the toilet or dip his paws into the water bowl before drinking? Does he stir the water or move his water bowl? Is he as happy and healthy as he can be? Have you wondered why he does these things or isn’t quite as well as he could be? So happens, there is a very good reason for this odd behavior or poor fitness and the solution is, according to just about every vet you’ll ask; a cat fountain.
In the wild, cats avoid still water. Think about it. What happens in water? Things, like bacteria, grow in it. Animals leave their waste in it and more bacteria grow. Things die in it and still more bacteria and other lethal organisms propagate.
When the water is moving all that waste and those microorganisms are washed down stream. They don’t become concentrated. And this is why cats crave moving water. They are hard-wired to seek it because in nature only moving water is safe, and cats are still very much ‘in the wild’.
And this is why cat water fountains are so important and why so many vets recommend them. If a cat isn’t attracted to the available water source, (a bowl of water), he won’t drink enough and not drinking enough gives rise to a host of serious ailments, some of which are deadly.
“I am a veterinarian with specialty training (ie board certified) in internal medicine. Cats are my favorite species and I’m always on the look out for ways to improve their well being. I first saw these fountains (Thirstycat fountains) on the American Association for Feline Practitioners website. I was impressed and eventually ordered a fountain for my cats (Brakentree).
Yes these fountains cost more than the “Economy” varieties, but there is a saying, “you get what you pay for”, and when folks complain about prices….well…I’ll take quality over junk any day. I have Thirsty Cat Fountain brochures at my hospital, so clients can find out about this wonderful product.
No more dripping faucets… and wasting water… a “no-no” here out west. The cats drink more and geriatrics are able to find the water surface much easier. This eliminates paw drinking and contaminated water. It also helps keep old cats with arthritis and cats with kidney disease hydrated. Plus they just plain old like it!

Veterinarian Dr. Lynn Bahr of the Cat Clinic in Roswell, GA has this to say: “Instinctually, cats sense that standing water could be contaminated making running water a safer alternative. Moving water is oxygenated and may even taste better. Cats are complicated creatures and not always easy to understand but we do know many don’t drink enough water, especially if fed a dry only diet. Anything that encourages them to drink more and stay properly hydrated will improve their health and water fountains are a great way to entice them to do so.”
